Being Human: What AI Can’t Replace

AI is all the rage and is undeniably revolutionizing the workplace. Though it can feel a little scary or overwhelming, there’s also some good news: AI cannot replace what makes us uniquely human.

Here’s what AI can’t do:

  • Show Empathy. While AI is great at processing data, it can’t replace the depth of human understanding. Empathy is our superpower, and a simple Google search shows tons of research to support that emotional intelligence is more valued than a high IQ.
  • Create Connection. AI may be able to generate information—and fast—but genuine human connection always outshines an algorithm. We need the skills to read and gauge human emotions while also engaging in nuanced (and sometimes hard) conversations in the workplace. It may sound trite, but technology simply can’t replace human tenderness.
  • Speak Up. Effective communication is at the heart of leadership. While AI can help with content creation, it can’t emulate the voice and passion of a human speaker. Speaking up in meetings, presenting big ideas, and listening in return require not just the right words but also your energy, conviction, and presence. Your voice and its intonation are essential in motivating your team.

Lastly, the fear around AI’s automation can be replaced by the excitement that we can spend less time on the mundane parts of our jobs (expense reports, anyone?) and more time collaborating, creating, and spending time with people.
